Description (The direction towards Mecca (Qibla) is described as eastern and other directions are named accordingly)

A rectangular freestanding walled enclosure (i.e. with streets to all four sides) measuring about12.5 x 15 m, with the main entrance façade facing west. There are two small rooms by the perimeter wall in the north-eastern and north-western corners of the enclosure. They are plain and undecorated, covered with wooden roofs with beams visible from below. In the middle of a symmetrical front façade built of ashlar stone, the block of the entrance portal protrudes slightly and is slightly higher that the W wall. It has a pointed-arch gate framed with a raised rectangular-profile frame set in a shallow pointed-arched recess, over which are similar undecorated frames around the spandrels with plain raised panels (possibly the gate is unfinished and a planned moulding was never carved?) The portal is rather squat in proportions. Over the portal is an empty sunken panel with the sides shaped like a typical Mamluk inscription panel. It is partially covered with a huge modern marble plaque with the name of the Basusi family. On each side of the portal is a rectangular window set in a shallow rectangular recess topped with a two-tiered band of simple muqarnas. The lintels are flat arches of simple joggled voussoirs and are framed by raised rectangular-profile frames. In the chamfered south-western corner is a small, shallow rectangular empty niche – possibly another indication that the building was never completed as planned.

Condition of preservation

Severe damage from rising damp to the lower parts of the walls. Stone masonry of the façade crudely re-pointed. Walls heightened recently.
